At our recent Chicago Harbor Safety Committee in-person meeting leaders from MPDC presented the on-line form to over 60 attendees. Mike McElroy, President explained to the audience one of the 2025 Committee Initiatives is mapping and documenting egress access points in order to provide Marine First Responders accurate location information.

"MPDC is working with partners including the Chicago Harbor Safety Committee, Friends of the Chicago River, and Urban Rivers in order to document river edge conditions for safety and recreation.", stated Kate Eakin, Director.

Eladio Montenegro, explains "To collect location data and photos of escape ladders, docks, and more the MPDC established an online form to engage neighbors and partners."

Data collected through this activity will be used to:

  • Request specific improvements for watercraft user safety and comfort

  • Request removal of objects or corrections of conditions that threaten safety

  • Seek ways to deconflict various users of the river and river edge, including motor boats, human powered craft, and fishers, among others

  • Seek creative opportunities to improve access and experiences on the river

Anyone can use the form, and MPDC will release the collected data on their website as things get going. Kate explained, "We will also share with relevant government agencies to pursue improvements."

The Chicago Harbor Safety Committee appreciates the work MPDC is doing to improve safety, security and hospitality along the Chicago River and waterways.
